Vehicle Owners Urged to Receive Renewal Notices Online

BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) is offering another convenient, environmentally-friendly electronic option to make interacting with the MVA as customer friendly as possible. Now, rather than receive a renewal notice by mail, the MVA can send you a reminder electronically by email along with instructions on how to handle your vehicle registration renewal online.  All you have to do is register with the MVA and provide a proper email address by going to www.mva.maryland.gov or visit a customer kiosk at any MVA office throughout the State.

"This new online initiative is another customer-friendly electronic option MVA offers so citizens can conduct their business with MVA without making a trip to an MVA office,” said Transportation Secretary Beverley K. Swaim-Staley. “By replacing the number of traditional mailings involved in the registration renewal process with email notices, the MVA saves both paper and money.  This initiative makes sense both environmentally and economically.”

Each year the MVA mails nearly two million paper vehicle registration renewal notices.  Projections show a savings of more than $450,000 in taxpayer dollars can be obtained if just 50 percent of annual renewal notices are handled electronically.

To sign up for the new, free email renewal service, log on to the MVA website at www.mva.maryland.gov or visit an MVA kiosk at any MVA office.  Click on “account management,” then “email management.”  To provide the MVA with an email address for renewal purposes requires a driver’s license number, date of birth and last four digits of your social security number or pin.  Remember, there is no charge for the transaction.

“Why not manage your MVA business online?  The environmentally-friendly email option to receive your vehicle registration is convenient and user friendly,” said MVA Administrator John Kuo.  “We are pleased to offer so many online transactions that drivers and vehicle owners can complete anywhere, anytime at MVA online!”

By logging on to www.mva.maryland.gov., customers also can: obtain a driving record, receive an extension for the Vehicle Emission Inspection Program, change their address, order a replacement title, obtain a temporary registration, pay an administrative flag, provide the MVA with emergency contact information and much more.

In 2010, more than 35 percent of Marylanders who renewed their vehicle registrations did so online, by MVA SelfServ Kiosk or by telephone.
