Due to the FEDERAL REAL ID Act, documents may be required to renew your Maryland Driver’s License or Identification Card.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF I NEED TO BRING DOCUMENTS?
The MDOT MVA will notify you with either an email or paper notice stating “Documents Now Required to Renew”. Here is a sample paper notice:
WHERE CAN I COMPLETE MY RENEWAL?
Your renewal must take place in-person at an MDOT MVA branch location.
WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED IN ORDER TO RENEW?
Click here for a complete list of acceptable documents. Please bring the following documents with you when you renew:
- One (1) proof of age and identity.
Examples: An original or certified copy of your U.S. Birth Certificate or a valid, unexpired U.S. Passport. (If your current legal name is different than what is listed on these documents, you will also need to provide a government-issued marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other court document(s) to explain the name change.)
- One (1) proof of Social Security
Examples: An original Social Security Card, W-2 form, or a Social Security Administration Benefits Statement, SSA-1099 (Displaying your name and full Social Security number.)
- Two (2) proofs of Maryland residency
Examples: Insurance Card, Vehicle Registration, Credit Card Bill, Utility Bill, Bank Statement, or Mail from a Federal, State, or Local government agency. (Which display your name, Maryland residential address and are from two (2) separate organizations.)

WHAT WILL THE MDOT MVA DO WITH MY DOCUMENTS?
Due to the federal REAL ID Act, the MDOT MVA is now required to keep a securely scanned image of your documents on our secure servers. No paper copies will be made.
