Maryland MVA - 100 YearsThen and now...2010 ushers in the Centennial year for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).  The MVA traces its beginning back to 1910 when Maryland's General Assembly enacted into law a bill creating the Office of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, and Governor Austin Crothers appointed John E. George as its first Commissioner.  Today, John T. Kuo has the distinction of serving as MVA's 18th Administrator.

Since its inception, the MVA has and continues to lead the nation in innovations, from a 1920's reciprocal agreement between Maryland and the District of Columbia to allow drivers to cross state boundaries without first having to purchase tags of the jurisdiction to a 2007 partnership with the Maryland State Police and Capital Wireless Integrated Network that gave law enforcement access to driver's photos for the first time, during a standard traffic stop.

Even today the MVA continues to work to bring about more conveniences through innovation and technological advancements including:  eMVA for transactions completed over the Internet, two mobile MVA buses that serve remote communities throughout the State, and a highly advanced customer traffic management system that helps reduce the time customers wait in any of the MVA's branches – just to name a few!

Throughout this centennial year, MVA will be celebrating in every branch office and business unit "A Century of Service: Keeping Maryland Rolling Since 1910" highlighting our tremendous progress in technology, customer service and security.
