MARYLAND MEETS REAL ID STANDARDS
State Issued Driver License and Identification Card Valid for Federal Purposes

GLEN BURNIE, MD (December 21, 2012) – The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has been recognized by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a national leader in compliance with the federal REAL ID driver's license and identification card (DL/ID) requirements. On December 20, 2012, DHS notified Maryland that it is one of 13 states that meet the standards of the REAL ID ACT for issuance of a DL / ID.

MVA Administrator John Kuo said, "We (MVA) developed a well-thought out compliance plan and exerted enormous efforts to comply with the REAL ID Act. The hard work has paid off and now we serve as a model for others states to follow."

What does this means for Maryland? Since the State is in compliance, Maryland residents can continue to use their Maryland issued driver license or State ID for boarding commercial aircraft and other federal purposes. Maryland residents can also have confidence that the MVA is in compliance with these important security standards put in place by DHS as a result of the 911 Commission recommendations.

"MVA will continue to work with the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to ensure a smooth traveling experience for all Maryland residents and travelers coming through our airports," added Kuo.

The Real ID Act is a federal law that requires state drivers' licenses and non-driver identification (ID) cards meet certain minimum standards. The cards that meet these standards are acceptable for federal purposes, such as access to federal facilities, boarding commercial aircraft, or other secure federal facilities designated by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

States originally had until January 15, 2013 to meet real ID standards, however, DHS has announced it will grant temporary deferments to States yet to meet compliance. DHS plans to publish a revised compliance enforcement schedule in the fall of 2013. Under the REAL ID Act, only people with verified identification will be able to fly, enter federal buildings or otherwise conduct business with the federal government.
