 Driver Self-Assessment Tools

Bookmark and Share

Ideally, the older driver should assess his or her own performance. A self-assessment prompts the driver not only to recognize and correct possible shortcomings, but also to plan ahead for inevitable effects of aging. The assessment also helps the driver understand the concerns of others. Several organizations offer free self-assessment guides that individuals can use to determine whether or not he or she is a safe driver, some of these include:

  • AAA Foundation's Drivers 55 Plus: Self-Rating Form is a tool that allows drivers to assess their own performance. It provides specific safety suggestions based on the driver's answers to 15 questions. Also, the full brochure Drivers 55 Plus is available.
  • AAA Foundation's Roadwise Review is an online self-assessment screening tool that measures the mental and physical abilities important for safe driving.
  • AAA Foundation's "The Older and Wiser Driver" is a 12-page brochure, and there is also a 22-minute video. Both versions include safety tips and information about what to expect with aging.
  • AARP's "Test Your Driving IQ" is a self-assessment quiz, which asks drivers to answer ten questions about today's driving environment and how they react to driving on today's roads.
