Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program Hybrid Vehicles Qualified for Exemption
- Effective October 1, 2012, newly registered qualified hybrid vehicles will be scheduled for VEIP testing at least 36 months after the model year of the vehicle.
- The previous VEIP exemption for qualified hybrid vehicles was eliminated by the Maryland legislature in the 2007 Maryland General Assembly (Senate Bill 103) and became effective October 1, 2012. Accordingly, all hybrid vehicles are required to be inspected on the normal two-year VEIP test cycle.
- A qualified hybrid vehicle is defined as obtaining a rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of at least 50 miles per gallon (mpg) during city fuel economy tests.
