MDOT MVA Marks First Anniversary of Vehicle Recall Safety Notice Program
Innovative approach has helped remedy more than 150,000 recall notices
Glen Burnie, MD (April 4, 2019) – More than 150,000 Marylanders have resolved vehicle safety recall issues over the past year with the help of a program that uses the state’s vehicle registration renewal process to tell people about open recalls. April marks the one-year anniversary of the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) initiative, the first of its kind in the nation.
“Ensuring that Maryland residents travel safely on our roads is our No. 1 priority. By providing this information we are helping to save lives,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn.
Through the program, vehicle safety recall information is printed on registration renewal notices, which are sent via mail and email about 60 days before a registration period ends. The information is provided as a courtesy. An open recall does not affect the ability of a customer to renew their vehicle registration.
“At MDOT MVA, we are committed to providing premier customer service. Our vehicle safety recall notifications demonstrate our commitment to the well-being of our customers and everyone driving on Maryland roads,” said Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “We are pleased with the results of our first year and look forward to finding new, innovative ways to promote the safety of all Maryland drivers.”
The two-year pilot initiative is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Through its experience, MDOT MVA has become a trusted resource and is lending advice and guidance to other organizations interested in implementing similar programs.
To obtain vehicle recall information, MDOT MVA partnered with Cox Automotive, Inc., a provider of integrated solutions for the automotive industry addressing inventory, marketing, sales, service, mobility and operations.
“Through this partnership, Maryland and Cox Automotive are helping to address the challenge of achieving a 100 percent recall completion rate,” said Karyn Wrye, senior director, Government Affairs, Cox Automotive. “Maryland’s focus on the safety of its citizens in bringing consumer awareness to the forefront so that open recalls can be resolved is a pivotal step in achieving that goal.”
Customers also can check a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for open recalls by contacting their authorized dealership or using the VIN look-up tool on the NHTSA website www.nhtsa.gov.
