Highway Safety Grants
Dear Highway Safety Partners:
Maryland has instituted an online grants system, SHARP, the Safe Highways Application and Reporting Program. Your organization will use this site to apply for and manage your highway safety grant-related projects. Annually, the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) provides highway safety funds to support the effort of eligible government agencies and private organizations to eliminate or reduce highway safety problems and enhance highway safety consistent with Maryland's Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). To support Maryland's many highway safety activities, the MHSO administers a grant program in which federal traffic safety funds provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), along with state funds, are provided to state agencies, local governments, and other organizations to implement statewide and local programs. Many of these programs are developed and implemented through collaborative efforts between state, local, federal, and private sector partners.
The MHSO relies on partners and cooperation among multiple agencies to achieve measurable results. Managing your grant application and grant reporting requirements in SHARP helps provide the MHSO with an accurate account of progress.
Available Grants and Idea-Starters
We know that coming up with a potential project takes a significant amount of time and effort-consumable items that may deter you or your agency from applying for a grant. To ensure your projects align with MHSO's program areas and objectives, we've prepared a list of potential project ideas. The MHSO staff is available for technical assistance. Please feel free to call our office at 410-787-4050 and someone will be happy to assist you.
Data and Other Highway Safety Resources
The MHSO relies on the analysis and interpretation of data to support problem identification and strategic planning. The SHSP is a guidebook for addressing those identified priority areas, and the data analyses support the objectives and activities for these priority areas.
After you have educated yourself on our safety programs and formulated ideas for a proposal, using available data, make your way to SHARP to get started on the process of applying for a grant. Also please take some time to review and add to your own calendar the dates on the Grant Year Timeline. Your use of SHARP will require submission of grant applications on a firm deadline.
